Capitol Canada 5810 Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever

Released in mid February, 1967. The disc reached the number one spot on charts in a couple of major Canadian markets with Penny Lane being the more favoured side.

Strawberry Fields Forever was a departure for the Beatles as it contained a number of ground breaking inclusions such as reverse-recorded instrumentation, tape loops, a mellotron, etc. that were new to Beatles' fans. Perhaps because of this the single failed to reach the number one slot in the U.K or U.S.

For the first and only time in Canada Capitol had Compo press a special white label promotional copy. On the promotional copy Penny Lane had a longer trumpet ending.

It is often reported that 100 copies were pressed.  However, based on the number of copies I have seen, I believe closer to 200 copies may have been pressed.  Either way the record is a rare Canadian Beatles' collectible.  Copies were mailed to radio stations and reviewers in a stock Capitol company sleeve.

The regular commercial copy did not have the long trumpet ending of the promotional copy.  The very first commercial pressing had a run time on the Penny Lane side of 3:00.  Later pressings were corrected to 2;57.

As was the practice Capitol Canada issued the first few thousand copies in an imported US picture sleeve. Additional copies were released in the stock Capitol sleeve.

A NM copy of the Canadian single is about $25 to $40. A NM copy of the sleeve is between $80 and $120. The promotional 45 in EX condition ranges from $275 to $400
