Capitol Canada 5715 Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby

Released in early August, 1966. Initial copies came in an imported US picture sleeve.  Additional pressings came in one of two stock Capitol sleeves.  The first was a white sleeve with Capitol written across the top and the second was a white sleeve with Capitol printed diagonally across the sleeve.

On the strength of Eleanor Rigby the single reached number one for at least a week and in some Canadian markets two weeks. Interestingly, the Beatles did not play instruments on Eleanor Rigby.  Paul provided lead vocals and John and George added harmonies. A classical string ensemble supplied the instrumentation.

Almost all copies of this release have the word Canada in the rim text in brackets: (Canada). However, a few copies have the word Canada without the brackets on the Yellow Submarine side or on the Eleanor Rigby side with the latter being the harder to find.  It has been reported, but not confirmed, that there are copies with labels without brackets on Canada on both labels on the same disc.

A NM copy of the disc alone has a value of $30.  A NM copy of the sleeve alone has a value of $70 to $120.  I speculate a NM copy without the word Canada in brackets on either side is probably worth $40 to $80 and a copy with no brackets on both sides closer to $100.

  1. I'm interested in your comment about the 5715 copies without brackets on Canada. You've posted an image of the Yellow Submarine side of the single without Canada in brackets. Have you seen a copy where Eleanor Rigby has no brackets around Canada, but the Yellow Submarine side does have the brackets? Matrix runouts are 45616-827 and 45619-827.

    1. I don't have one and I have never seen one. The no brackets Yellow Submarine is quite hard to locate, but I have seen a few. Based on what I have seen/found over the years a no brackets Eleanor Rigby would be quite rare.
