"She Loves You/I'll Get You" Capitol 72125 was released in Canada in September, 1963. In the U.S. the same song pairing was released a little earlier on the Swan label. It was a number one hit in both countries meaning that lots of these discs were pressed, especially in the first few months of 1964.
For the Canadian Beatles collector the interesting find is the initial pressing without any dash and number at the end of the etched matrix. Most copies you come across will have a -2 after the matrix indicating the pressing is from early 1964. Only the very first copies will be without the -2 and have the etched matrix 7XCE 17395 & 7XCE 17396
It is believed that as few as 1000 copies were pressed without the dash before the pressing was interrupted. For the 1964 pressing run new pressing parts were created with the -2 matrix ending on the "She Loves You" side. As a result, the initial pressing of this iconic Beatles Canadian release is rare and highly collectible.
There is also a scarce pressing of this record with a -3 following the matrix on the "She Loves You" side 7XCE-17395-3 with the (-3) being very faint.
For the week of November 30, Vancouver's CFUN listed "She Loves You" as a "Pick Hit of the Week". It entered the charts at number 13 in the week of December 7, reached number 2 the next week and then number 1 the week of December 21st, 1963.
Below is a portion of a CKEY Toronto radio station survey from December 13, 1963. The Beatles are listed as a "Hit Bound Sound" entering the chart at number 31.
This release was heavily promoted both in the U.S. and Canada. In Canada a few of the initial 1963 pressing run (with no dash or number following the matrix) were sent to radio stations in a Capitol Records "Rush" promotional sleeve.
Valuations for excellent to NM copies:
In 2016 more common copies with the -2 ending in NM condition sold for $55.00 and $105.00.
I am unaware of any recent recorded sales of the rare 1963 initial no dash matrix pressing. My best estimate for an excellent to NM copy would be $200 to $300. For an initial copy in a Capitol Records "Rush" sleeve add $30.00.
