Long Tall Sally was released in mono in Canada in April, 1964. It was the third in a trio of Canadian only albums. Having a cover similar to the U.S. released "The Second Album", this L.P. is not as highly sought after as the more unique "Beatlemania" and "Twist and Shout".
Between 1964 and 1987 this album was pressed with a variety of labels and covers and in a number of different pressing plants. In 1980 it was pressed in true stereo for the first time. For the collector the very first issue is the most desirable.
The initial 1964 pressing can be identified by the placement of the catalogue number at the top left front of the cover. On the very first release the catalogue number is lower than the text "File under: The Beatles Pop Rock Vocal Group". In addition the cover has a more brown, less orange hue, than later issues.
In 1965 copies on the black rainbow label were issued in a cover with a rare printers variation. At the front top of the cover the words * File Under....Vocal Group * have an asterix at the beginning and end of the statement. Only a few copies are known to exist.
Other sought after variations include the 1970-1971 short lived red target label release which always attracts collector interest. Also noteworthy are two stereo pressings on the retro rainbow label. The first is a 1983 Cinram pressing collectible for it's scarcity and the second is the 1980 -1987 Columbia pressing known for the quality of the sound.
