Capitol Canada 72101 From Me To You / Thank You Girl rare 1st pressings

It is believed that only 1000 copies of this disc were pressed in June 1963.  The initial pressing had minor regional chart success but was in competition with Del Shannon's version of the "A" side which charted much better.

In 1964 the Beatles singles, "She Loves You", "Roll Over Beethoven" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" were big sellers and as a result Capitol 72101 was re-pressed.

Fortunately it is easy to distinguish between the initial 1963 pressings and the 1964 re-pressings.  On the initial 1963 pressing the music publishing credits on both labels are assigned to Northern Songs Ltd.  Within a short time the A-side publishing credits were changed to Ambassador Music Ltd while the B-side remained as Northern Songs Ltd.

In 1964 the credits on the B-side were changed to Conrad Publishing. Also, later 1964 re-pressings have a -2 following the etched matrix.

There are four identifiable pressings/label variations:

1) The initial 1963 pressing has a hand etched matrix with no dash or number following and the Northern Songs Ltd. music credit on both labels.

Rare true first pressing with the Northern Songs credit on both sides.

2) A slightly later, but still early pressing from 1963 with an Ambassador Songs Ltd. credit on the A-side and a Northern Songs Ltd. credit on the B-side.

3) An early 1964 pressing with a hand etched matrix with no dash or number following, but with Conrad Publishing on the B-side

4) A later 1964 re-pressing with a -2 following the matrix and Conrad Publishing as the B-side music credit.

In 2016 a 1964 re-pressing copy in near mint condition sold for $120 and in 2018 another 1964 copy in excellent condition sold for $75.00.

The initial 1963 pressing with the Northern songs credits on both sides and the slightly later pressing with Ambassador on the A-side and Northern on the B-side are hard to find. Recent sales figures are non existent, but I would estimate an excellent copy of either would fetch $150 - $200 and a near mint copy $300+.

  1. I have one of the double-sided Northern Songs singles, with no dash in the run-out matrix. Do you want an image of the labels for your blog?
