"Paul Is Dead" The Beatles "Very Together" L.P. Polydor 242.008

Released in November 1969 this L.P. was an attempt by Polydor to recycle their Beatles & Tony Sheridan Hamburg recordings.  This is one of four unique Canadian pressed LP's and was the only Canadian release of the Beatles' Hamburg studio recordings.

The first pressing in late 1969 has machine pressed matrix numbers while pressings from mid 1970 were remastered and have an etched matrix.  Transition discs can be found with a machined matrix on one side and an etched matrix on the other.  The 1969 and 1970 issues also have slightly different photo credits on the back cover and a slightly darker front cover.  The earliest cover credits the photo art to John Patrick Amish while the 1970 cover adds two additional names.

The "Paul Is Dead" rumour first surfaced in the UK as early as 1967 with stories that Paul was killed in a car accident.  In late 1969 the rumour gained strength in the U.S. and the cover of this L.P., with the snuffed out candle, became one of the clues cited as "proof" that McCartney was indeed dead.  As a result this L.P. is a desirable Beatles Canadian collectible.

The hunt for "Paul is dead" clues and the supposed cover-up endures as a classic example of the development and persistence of an urban legend.

Some suspect the release of this L.P. was an attempt by Polydor to use the "Paul is Dead" rumours to once again cash in on the Beatles and spur some record sales. The plan did not work as sales were poor and shortly after it's release this L.P. could be found in chain store discount bins at knock down prices.  By early 1971 a low price of .99 cents was common with many deleted copies sporting a "rough" punch hole in the top corner.

The L.P. is prone to cover wear especially on the front so copies in Excellent to Near Mint condition are hard to find.

Current values:

A sealed copy in top condition sells for $150 to $200.
A NM disc and cover in the original shrink wrap is $65 to $90.
An excellent copy with minor cover wear and a Near Mint disc and labels is around $65
A VG+ copy with cover and ring wear and possibly a delete hole has a value of $25 to $35.
