MGM 13227X Why / Cry for a Shadow

Released in March, 1964, this 45 RPM contained two songs from Tony Sheridan's and the Beatles' 1961 German recording session.

The disc was pressed in Canada for MGM by Quality Records. Initial copies, maybe a few thousand, were released in an imported red sleeve.  Remaining copies were released in a stock gray MGM company sleeve.

The A-side was written by Sheridan and "Cry for a Shadow" was written by Harrison and Lennon. John, Paul, George and Pete Best played on both compositions.  Sheridan did not play on "Cry For A Shadow". Aside from "Anthology" tracks this was only one of two official Beatles' releases with Pete Best on drums, the other one being "Ain't She Sweet".

The sleeve is prone to wear and hard to find.  The value of the sleeve and disc in VG+ condition is in the $60 to $100 range, in NM condition the value is above $300. The disc by itself in VG+ condition has a value of $20 and in NM condition about $45.

This sleeve has been counterfeited.  Older counterfeited sleeves can be identified as they are not wide enough to accommodate a 7" disc.  More recent counterfeits can be identified by the differences in the red colour and have the appearance of being printed on a modern ink jet printer.
